Niswa Introduces New Board Members, Honors Dr Shamim Ibrahim


Niswa Association introduces new Board members and honors the Association’s long time president, Dr. Shamim Ibrahim

On Sunday, February 20, Niswa Association held an event to introduce the Association’s new board members and honor Niswa's long-time President, Dr. Shamim Ibrahim.  About 80 women gathered at a private residence in West Hills to enjoy lunch, musical entertainment and raise awareness for women's issues.

Dr. Ibrahim was honored for her visionary leadership and tireless service she has dedicated to Niswa since its inception. She has led the organization and served as President since 1990. Mrs. Amina Adaya, a long-time Niswa benefactor, presented Dr. Ibrahim with a plaque, flowers and a gift on behalf of the thousands of woman she has helped.

Niswa also announced its current and new Board Members which include Farida Barye (President), Arshia Ghani (Vice President), Fatima Dadabhoy (Secretary), Sofia Subhan (Treasurer), Fahima Khan ( Fundraising Chairperson), Naveen Haider, Ruksana Adaya and Bilquis Mayet. Also recognized was Niswa's Program Director Nida Lukhmani.

Niswa is a non-profit charitable organization which was established in 1990 by a group of South Asian women.  The Association is committed to serving minority communities by providing culturally appropriate counseling, a 24-hour hotline, shelter for victims of domestic violence, foster care and adoption services for children, crisis intervention, immigration and legal assistance, and preventative health education. Niswa is based in Los Angeles and serves clients nationwide, regardless of race or religion.

Farida Barye spoke briefly about the much needed services that Niswa provides to South Asian women in Los Angeles. "Niswa is a one-of-a-kind organization. We recently embarked on an ambitious plan to provide long-term sustainability and financial stability to Niswa by purchasing a building. It will serve as an additional shelter for women and provide rental income. Our goal is to raise enough funds to pay off the building in the next 6 months, " said Farida Barye.

Arshia Ghani and Rukhsana Mohammed also commended Dr. Ibrahim and related funny anecdotes about her to the audience. They described her as a mentor, leader, and the "heart and soul" of Niswa.
