PPP submits notice in NA on soaringcircular debt

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) on Wednesday submitted a calling-attention notice in the National Assembly about the soaring circular debt of Rs286 billion in the power sector.
The former ruling party, which had left around Rs500 billion circular debt for the incoming government, termed the rising circular debt a “menace”, and drew the attention of the House to this important issue.
The ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) claimed to have paid over Rs450 billion to rid the circular debt. However, it again started adding up against the backdrop of the difference between the rate of power purchase and sale to the consumer.
“We would like to bring the attention of this august House to the rising menace of circular debt of Rs286 billion under the rule 88 of the Rules and Procedures of the National Assembly,” stated the notice, signed by MNAs Dr Azra Afzal, Imran Zafar Leghari, Shazia Atta Marri, Dr Nafisa Shah and Shahida Rehmani.
The PPP MNAs also drew the attention of the finance minister to the lack of interest and dismal response by the bidders for purchase of 3G and 4G technologies.
