Panamanian minister denies meeting Dar

KARACHI: Panamanian Vice Minister of Economy Ivan Zarak on Sunday clarified it was Pakistan’s Finance Secretary who sat beside him at a conference not the country’s Finance Minister Ishaq Dar.

The clarification comes after a spokesman for Pakistan's Ministry of Finance said claim by Ivan Zarak during a CNN interview that he met Ishaq Dar in Washington is baseless, unfounded and extremely surprising.

The spokesman said Pakistan’s finance ministry is represented in the World Bank/IMF spring meetings, currently in progress, by Federal Finance Secretary Dr Waqar Masood Khan due to the cancellation of the visit by Ishaq Dar.

Mr Zarak took to twitter to explain that at the Global Connect Initiative meeting he sat beside Waqar Masood, Federal Secretary of Finance and not Finance Minister Ishaq Dar.

Ivan Zarak was asked by a journalist who visited him in relation to the Panama papers’ controversy to which he claimed that Pakistan’s finance minister had held a meeting with him.

Pakistani government is under immense pressure after names of members of ruling family appeared in the tax documents leaked from a Panamanian law firm, with opposition threatening to mount a protest march on Raiwind if transparent probe is not carried out into offshore business interests of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his family.
