Parliamentary parties likely to join national security conference
PM will chair meeting on Aug 9; top military officials will brief leadership
INPISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will chair a national security conference on Saturday in which parliamentary leaders of various political parties will also join the government bloc contrary to normal practice.
Sources confirm that the security conference had not been planned and was summoned on an emergency basis to discuss the political scenario prevailing in Pakistan country, particularly the impending marches of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and the Pakistan Awami Tehreek and their impact on Zarb-e-Azb military operation.
The conference – to be held at the PM House and attended by Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif and Inter Services Intelligence Director General Zaheerul Islam – is also scheduled to discuss matters relating to Pakistan’s internal security and the participants are expected to be briefed on the anti-terror war as well as the military operation underway in North Waziristan tribal agency.
The leaders of all the political parties having representation in the parliament have been extended invitation on telephone by the federal ministers.
Besides chief ministers of all four provinces, Interior Minister Ch Nisar Ali, Finance Affairs Minister Ishaq Dar, Defence Minister Khawaja Mohammad Asif and Adviser on National Security and Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz will also attend the meeting.
The army chief and the ISI chief would brief the participants about the overall security situation as well as the progress in the ongoing Zarb-e-Azb operation.
The meeting, comes at a time when the August 14 million march of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf on Islamabad is only a few days away and different political parties are busy to defuse the situation so as there is no harm to the democracy in Pakistan.
During the Thursday meeting, the MQM delegation suggested the prime minister to convene All Parties Conference.
After consultation with his advisers, Nawaz decided to convene the National Security Conference so that the leadership is briefed about the current situation.
