LHC CJ asked to form larger bench on ‘Azadi March’ plea

LAHORE: Lahore High Court’s Justice Khalid Mehmood has requested the chief justice to form a larger bench to hear the petition seeking a restraining order against “Azadi March” of the PTI.
During the hearing the petitioner’s lawyer, AK Dogar took the stance that Azadi March on August 14 will become a cause of political turmoil and create more differences between the political parties. Moreover, he argued that Azadi March will invite intervention of anti-democratic forces. Additional Attorney General Naseer Ahmed Bhutta told the court that the opposition parties have not yet submitted an application seeking permission for the Azadi March. He said the matter will be looked into once an application seeking permission for the planned march is received.
While ordering formation of larger bench to hear the case, Justice Mehmood said that the issue is very sensitive and should be handled carefully. On Wednesday, Justice Khalik Mehmood Khan of the LHC had sought assistance of the attorney general and Punjab advocate general to decide the maintainability of the petition seeking a restraining order against “Azadi March”. Justice Khan had during the hearing asked the petitioner’s counsel if the court could pass an order to the government to stop the Azadi March. The counsel stated that the maintainability of the petition will be decided before further proceedings.
