Permission for rallies not under any deal: govt

ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan denied on Thursday that the government had permitted Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and Pakistan Awami Tehreek to lead their long march rallies to the federal capital after striking a deal through backdoor channels. Addressing a press conference, Nisar said that the government had showed much patience despite issuance of serious threats by the PTI and PAT leaders in the past several days. “This is a democratic government and believes in the freedom of speech and expression. We have allowed the marchers in the capital city on the condition that they will not do anything unconstitutional,” he said. The interior minister said that law and order would be ensured at all costs and no one would be allowed to take the law into their hands. “Strict legal action will be taken against those who disturb the law and order. If anyone tries to enter the Red Zone, law will take its course,” he warned. “We will not allow anyone to take law in his/her hands. Protest in a democratic manner is acceptable. The media and civil society are closely monitoring all the activities,” he maintained.
