ISPR says troops deployed in Islamabad's Red Zone

ISLAMABAD: Troops have been deployed in Islamabad's Red Zone, said the Inter-Services Public Relations, the media wing of the army.

The ISPR said on Tuesday that the army contingent have been deployed for the security of the Red Zone. It said a request was sent for deployment of troops in the Red Zone.

The ISPR statement comes minutes after PAT chief Dr Tahiurl Qadri announced to move his sit-in inside the Red Zone asking participants to remain peaceful.

Earlier, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan announced that a decision had been taken to deploy the army in the Red Zone. "The army will assume security of the Red Zone within the next few hours," Nisar said, adding that a formal request was made in this regard.

Nisar added army troops will guard key buildings located in the Constitutional Avenue.

Television footage showed army being deployed at important buildings in the Red Zone including the Parliament and Supreme Court.

The decision was taken after the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) announced that they would be holding sit-ins in the Red Zone.
