Gen Sharif stresses early end to political gridlock
INP

ISLAMABAD – Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif on Wednesday stressed over warring politicians to resolve the current political impasse as soon as possible.

This is the second such statement from the Pakistan Army in less than 24 hours as political deadlock in Islamabad persists. Sources said that Gen Sharif made these remarks during a meeting with Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz this evening.

They discussed the situation in the federal capital in wake of the protests being staged by the Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf and the Pakistan Awami Tehreek. The meeting specifically discussed the security challenges which had arisen after supporters of the PAT besieged the parliament premises.

This is the second meeting between the army chief and the chief minister. Earlier, Interior Affairs Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali and Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif had held a meeting with the army chief a couple of days ago.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had also held a meeting with General Raheel Sharif on Tuesday to discuss the prevailing security specifically in the federal capital. Military and political leadership are in constant consultation in the wake of PTI and PAT march on the capital. Last evening, ISPR also came out with a similar statement, urging politicians to resolve the crisis.
