NA rejects PTI, PAT demands unanimously
Achakzai moves resolution which supports supremacy of constitution, law and condemns foul language of protesting groups
INPISLAMABAD – The National Assembly on Thursday unanimously adopted a resolution to uphold the supremacy of constitution and law and rejected demands of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and the Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT).
The resolution was moved by Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party chief Mehmood Khan Achakzai in the National Assembly. Terming the demands of the protesting parties as unconstitutional, the National Assembly condemned the foul language used by the protesting groups.
The House rejected the demands for the resignation of Nawaz Sharif as the prime minister and dissolution of the assemblies. The lawmakers vowed to uphold the supremacy of the constitution and sovereignty of the parliament. They also reiterated its resolve that the democracy would continue to function and flourish.
The House resolved to uphold the supremacy of the constitution, sovereignty of the parliament which embodies the will and the mandate of the people of Pakistan, and the prevalence of the rule of law. It reiterated its resolve to ensure that the democratic system continues to function and flourish in accordance with the provision of the constitution.
About election reforms, MNA Tahir Iqbal urged the election reforms committee to verify national identity cards as well as thumb impressions on them. Otherwise votes polled in the election cannot be verified, he said. He also said that the women participating in the protest were being dishonoured and Imran Khan and Tahirul Qadri were responsible for it.
He said that system in Pakistan was on the right track and the governments in the future would transfer their powers through democratic means. MNA Mohsin Shahnawaz said that the constitutional rights of all parliamentarians to move freely should be ensured. Earlier, the National Assembly session started at 11:40am on Thursday with the recitation from the Holy Quran.
National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq was in the chair. The House would continue debate on the current political situation. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif also attended the assembly session. The session was adjourned for Friday.
