GUJRANWALA – An anti-terrorism court (ATC) on Saturday issued orders for the arrest of Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) chief Tahirul Qadri in a case pertaining to torture of policemen by his party workers.

The court also summoned Qadri on August 29. In Lahore, an Anti-Terrorism Court granted bail to 72 workers of PAT who were rounded up by police on charges of violence. The PAT activists were produced before the court where the judge accepted their bail pleas for surety bonds of 0.1 million rupees each.

The followers of Dr Tahirul Qadri were arrested in Lahore on charges of violence and clashes with the police ahead of their party's anti-government march towards Islamabad. Qadri led his party workers in Islamabad, demanding resignations of Nawaz Sharif as the prime minister and Shahbaz Sharif as the chief minister of Punjab.

Dr Qadri accuses the government of Model Town violence in which at least 14 of his supporters were allegedly gunned down by the police. The protest is also joined by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) of Imran Khan.
