‘Nawaz would not have faced present situation had he shown respect’

LAHORE: Former prime minister and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Yousuf Raza Gilani said that Nawaz Sharif would not have faced the situation today had he shown due respect to the ruling of the speakers when he was the prime minister of Pakistan.
Commenting on the prime minister’s speech in the House on Wednesday, he said that the prime minister was articulating that since he had the full support of the parliament therefore it was not possible for him to resign, as there was no such provision in the constitution. Gilani reminded the prime minister that the members of his Party chanted slogans “Go Gilani Go” despite the fact he enjoyed the support of the House.
He said in a statement issued that PML-N undermined the institution of the parliament by not honouring the ruling of the speaker who was the custodian of the House in the parliamentary system of democracy. He said that he made all state institutions accountable to the parliament and the record of the parliamentary history of that period was a witness to this fact.
He said that on the contrary the incumbent prime minister hardly showed up to the House and the Upper House had not been so fortunate so far his attendance was concerned. He observed that the highest forum of the parliament had been reduced to dormant forum where matters of national interests and public policies were hardly discussed during this period.
