CEC appointment: SC extends deadline till Dec 5

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday gave Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Khursheed Shah time till December 5 to finalise a name for the appointment of a permanent chief election commissioner (CEC) and adjourned the hearing till Monday, December 8.

A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Nasirul Mulk heard the case regarding the appointment of CEC today.

Attorney General Salman Aslam Butt had informed the court that an important meeting was held on Monday evening between Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Syed Khursheed Shah for finalising the name, and that serious efforts are being made to ensure the appointment of the CEC in time. The consensus is about to be achieved, he told the court.

Chief Justice Nasirul Mulk said the court would adjourn the mater till Wednesday. Attorney General Salman Aslam Butt, however, submitted that he may be given more time as he would not be available to the court because he was going abroad.

The CJ then asked the attorney general to assure the court that permanent appointment of CEC will be made by December 5. The CJ told the AG, “You have to give solid assurance in this regard. We have decided on withdrawal of acting CEC till December 5.”

The court stated that notices will be issued to PM and Opposition Leader if they failed to abide by the court orders.
