ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly Syed Khursheed Shah have reportedly short listed four names for the slot of the chief election commissioner (CEC).

According to reports, Justice (retired) Sardar Raza Khan, Justice (retired) Shakir Ullah Jan, Justice (retired) Mian Muhammad Ajmal and Justice (retired) Tariq Pervez have been short listed. Sardar is the chief justice of Federal Shariat Court (FSC).) Shakir Ullah has served as the acting CEC,) Mian Ajmal is the ex-secretary law whereas Tariq Pervez is former judge of the Supreme Court and the former chief justice of Peshawar High Court.

Yesterday, the prime minister and the opposition leader held a meeting in Islamabad and discussed the names to appoint an impartial and non-controversial CEC, a constitutional obligation for the top slot of Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). Last month, the government finalised three names after consultation with the opposition; however, Justice (retired) Rana Bhagwandas and Justice (retired) Tasadduq Hussain Jilani excused them from accepting the post.

Due to the absence of the prime minister in Pakistan, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar telephoned Khursheed on Tuesday and discussed the names that are likely to be finalised in couple of days.
