ISLAMABAD - Federal Minister for Water and Power Khawaja Muhammad Asif on Thursday urged the Azad Jammu Kashmir government to explore its huge hydel potential in order to attain self-sufficiency in power generation.

In a meeting with Azad Jammu Kashmir Prime Minister Chaudhry Abdul Majid at the Ministry of Water and Power, Asif said that there were ample opportunities available for hydel generation in the territory which could shed light on the government's efforts to combat power shortage in the country.

The minister for water and power reiterated the federal government's resolve to provide all technical assistance to the Azad Jammu Kashmir government for launching small hydel power projects. Highlighting the importance of small hydel projects, the minister said that it would not only generate energy but also open vistas for economic activities including job opportunities for the people of the area.

Asif assured that present gap between demand and supply of power in Azad Jammu Kashmir would be minimised. He also assured that the Ministry of Water and Power would sort out all electricity-related issues of Azad Jammu Kashmir in consultation with all stakeholders.
