National outage: ministry blames Guddu plant management

ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Water and Power on Sunday blamed Guddu power plant management for the worst blackout in most of the country, saying investigation into Friday’s power outage indicated negligence and lack of coordination on the part of the Guddu power plant management.

The Power Ministry, in a statement issued to media on Sunday, said that investigation into Friday’s power outage indicated that due to negligence and lack of coordination on the part of Guddu power plant management, 220 to 500kv step-up Grid Station in Guddu was overloaded, which resulted in tripping of the northern transmission system.

The ministry also said that “action has been initiated against the chief executive officer (CEO) Guddu GENCO Rukhas Qureshi, Maula Buksh, Resident Engineer, and Muhammad Momin, Senior Shift Engineer”, and they have been suspended. Reportedly, all areas of Lahore, Gujranwaala, Sialkot, Gujrat, Faisalabad, Chakwal, Jhelum, Attock, Mardan, Swabi, Nowshera, Harripur faced worst power breakdown on Friday, while areas of south Punjab, Balochistan, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Sindh remained safe from the power breakdown.
