Two killed as protesting PIA workers clash with LEAs

KARACHI: At least two persons was killed and four others injured when police and Rangers personnel used water cannon, tear gas and rubber bullets against Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) protesting workers as they began to move towards the Jinnah International Airport in Karachi on Tuesday.

The injured identified as Innayat Raza succumbed to injuries at a private hospital, the facility’s spokesman confirmed.

Talking to media, DIG East Kamran Fazal said he was unaware about the death of the injured person, adding that they would investigate who opened fire on the protesters.

At least two demonstrating women were also injured in the protest after police used batons against them.

However, spokesman for the Sindh Rangers said in a statement that no bullet was fired by the paramilitary personnel during the incident.

A large contingent of Rangers and police personnel was stationed outside the airport to control the protestors and avoid any untoward incident.

Several protesters were also taken into custody by the law the enforcers.

The injured also include demonstrators and the cameraman of a local TV channel and they were shifted to hospitals for medical assistance.

The strike had caused work at the engineering, store, flight kitchen, and line maintenance departments to be completely suspended.

Earlier, PIA spokesman said flight operations from all airports across the country is continuing as per schedule.

The PIA spokesperson claimed that flights on all local and domestic routes were operating as per schedule.

Meanwhile, Information Minister Pervaiz Rasheed has said that PIA pilots and employees who are performing their duties are national heroes.

On the other hand, Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Syed Khursheed Shah has strongly condemned use of water cannon, tear gas and batons against the PIA protesters.
