Former PIA chief blames govt for mess

KARACHI: Arif Ali Abbasi, former chairman of the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), on Tuesday criticised the government action against the employees of the national carrier. Talking exclusively to Daily Times, Abbasi called upon the rulers to pay attention to the trust deficit between the government and the PIA employees immediately otherwise the situation could worsen. He said that statements being issued by the government could add fuel to the fire. He held the government responsible for the worsening situation and said the rulers were trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. The former PIA chief said the national carrier revived many international airlines such as Royal Jordanian Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Emirates and Air Malta. He said that PIA’s experienced staff was behind the success of these airlines. He said the government was trying to teach the PIA staff how to handle the national airline instead of using their experience for PIA’s revival. Abbasi said the government claimed that it was bringing foreign investment to Pakistan. He said that disruption of flight operations would bring a bad name to Pakistan. He said that use of force against peaceful protesters with the permission of the authorities concerned was unfortunate.
