SC wonders how PM established Jeddah factories in exile

ISLAMABAD: As hearings for the Panama Leaks case resumed on Thursday, Justice Asif Saeed Khosa wondered how Nawaz Sharif had set up Jeddah factories from exile, if Musharraf had taken over his leftover factories, as the PM had earlier claimed.

The attorney for Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif submitted his reply at the Supreme Court as the apex court resumed hearing for the Panama Leaks case. Copies of the reply were also given to the PTI.

According to details, the attorney for Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Makhdoom Ali, submitted his reply at the Supreme Court as hearing resumed for the Panama Leaks case. The larger bench was headed by Justice Asif Saeed Khosa.

As per the reply submitted by the Prime Minister's attorney, Nawaz Sharif was the provincial finance minister from 1981 to 1985, after which he became the Chief Minister of Punjab till 1988. From April-May 1988, he was the Acting Chief Minister of the province and in 1990, he became the Chief Minister of Punjab again.

Nawaz Sharif then went on to become the Prime Minister of Pakistan from 1990 to 1993. He was the Opposition Leader from 1993-1996 till his second stint as the country's premier began from 1997 till 1999, when his government was dismissed and he was ousted from the country by Gen. (r) Pervez Musharraf in a bloodless coup.

Justice Asif Saeed Khosa wondered how the Prime Minister was able to set up the Jeddah factories in exile when he had earlier claimed that Musharraf had taken over his leftover factories.

"How did he erect the Jeddah factories in exile then? Sharif family's financial adviser had promised to produce evidence in court. But now you are saying there is no evidence."

PTI lawyer Naeem Bukhari had urged the bench to discard the Qatari prince's letter and said that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had never mentioned in his earlier statements regarding the existence of any letter from the prince of Qatar. Bukhari urged the courts to discard the letter since it was not in harmony with Nawaz Sharif's earlier statements.

Justice Asif Saeed Khosa remarked that the letter had been written as a clarification from the Prime Minister's children.

"If the letter is expunged, then what will become of the clarification given by the Prime Minister's children?" he asked.

Proceedings of the case have been delayed till January 6.
