Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali takes oath as new acting CEC

ISLAMABAD: Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali, a senior judge of the Supreme Court, took oath as Acting Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of Pakistan here on Thursday. Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Tassadduq Hussain Jillani administered oath to him.

The oath taking ceremony was held at Supreme Court building. Judges of the Supreme Court, members of the Election Commission, Attorney General of Pakistan, President Supreme Court Bar Association, senior advocates and senior officials of the CEC and Supreme Court attended the ceremony.

Syed Tahir Shahbaz, Registrar Supreme Court, conducted the proceedings of the oath taking ceremony.

Justice Anwar Jamali was appointed as acting CEC on Wednesday after Justice Nasirul Mulk resigned as acting head of the electoral body following the notification of his appointment as Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) was issued.

After the appointment of new acting CEC, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has recorded a hat-trick of having acting chief election commissioners in a year.

The ECP sources told that after the naming of Justice Nasirul Mulk as the new chief justice of the Supreme Court, who served as acting chief election commissioner for months, Justice Jamali was to take his place till the time a full-time poll head was appointed.

Justice Jamali completed the Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce and the Bachelor’s Degree in Law from University of Sindh in the years 1971 and 1973 respectively.

He was enrolled at Sindh Bar Council as an Advocate of Lower Court on 10.01.1975, as an Advocate of High Court on 13.11.1977 and as an Advocate of Supreme Court on 14.05.1987 practiced at Hyderabad (Sindh) mainly on civil and constitutional side.

Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali was elevated as Judge of High Court of Sindh in May 1998 and elevated as Judge of Supreme Court on 03.08.2009.
