UK to support IDPs through UN agencies
Barton says UK supports Pakistan’s efforts in fight against terrorism

ISLAMABAD – British High Commissioner to Pakistan Philip Barton called on Federal Minister for Finance and Economic Affairs Senator Ishaq Dar at the Finance Ministry, according to a press release issued here on Thursday.

Barton discussed matters of mutual interest with the minister, and apprised him that the United Kingdom strongly supports Pakistan’s efforts in fight against terrorism. He said that the international community would provide necessary assistance to Pakistan to meet the challenges of huge internal displacement of people from the areas of operation.

“We stand behind you in this struggle,” he said, and assured the minister that his government will continue to support IDPs through the World Food Programme and other UN agencies. Senator Dar informed the high commissioner that as a result of prudent economic policies of the present government, the economy was moving in the right direction.

After the first year of firefighting, the economy was now in a comfortable situation, he said. The minister also said that there has been vast displacement of people from the North Waziristan Agency and the government was fully determined to extend all humanitarian support to assist and rehabilitate the displaced persons.

He said that almost more than half a million residents of the agency have been displaced and the government was utilizing all available means to assist them. The meeting was also attended by Finance Ministry adviser Rana Assad Amin, Special Assistant Shahid Mahmood and other senior officials of the ministry.
