Lahore tragedy: SP issued 'firing' orders
‘Elite Force ordered to target protesters on legs’

LAHORE – The initial report of the joint investigation team (JIT) – constituted to investigate the Model Town tragedy – revealed that the Superintendent of Police (SP) had ordered elite force personnel to open fire on protesters.

In a statement recorded to the investigation team, Elite Force in-charge Abdul Rauf said that SP Sulaiman had ordered the Elite Force personnel to target the protesters on their legs. After receiving the order from Sulaiman, Sabzazar Station House Officer (SHO) Sheikh Amir Saleem and other Elite Force personnel fired shots at the demonstrators that resulted in several deaths.

In the light of the statement recorded by Abdul Rauf, further investigation against Saleem and other Elite Force personnel is underway. On Wednesday, the investigation team took the Sabzazar SHO and eight personnel of the Elite Force into ‘custody’ for questioning.

At least, 11 Pakistan Awami Tehreek workers were killed and over 100 people were injured in the June 17 clash between police and the workers in Model Town area of Lahore.
