WASHINGTON: Pakistan will continue to be a critical partner of the United States in the region, US General John F Campbell, who has been nominated to lead American forces in Afghanistan, told a Congressional hearing.
“Pakistan’s first priority is its eastern border with India, but it also continues to be concerned over growing Indian influence in Afghanistan,” Gen. Campbell said in reply to a question.
The general, who appeared for a nomination hearing before the US Senate Armed Service Committee, saw Pakistan having a significant role in the Afghan security situation going forward.
“Pakistan is and will continue to be a critical partner in the region,” Campbell, who commanded RC-East in Afghanistan in 2010-11 years, said.
The military leader noted that the “stability of the entire region requires cooperation between Pakistan and Afghanistan.”
“Both nations face common threats that attack their civilian populations and threaten their long-term development.”
