PML-N should not involve army to counter Imran’s long march: Shujaat

LAHORE: In connection with PTI Chairman Imran Khan’s planned long march on August 14, Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) President and former premier Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain said on Wednesday that the N-League should not involve the army to achieve its political aims and not create a new tradition by taking the army chief to D-Chowk of Islamabad, in a reference to planned army parade at the place on the Independence Day.
The PML-Q leader, in a statement issued on Wednesday, said that August 14 was a national day and “we should observe it and maintain its sanctity”. Historically, the army parade was always held on March 23, but this had been discontinued for quite sometime, he added. Shujaat further stated that the August 14 function was previously held in the Presidency and then outside parliament. He said that during his tenure as the prime minister he had got it shifted to the Convention Centre in 2004, when it was participated by the armed forces’ chiefs and this function had continued to be held there till last time.
However, he said that this time, to get rid of a political issue, not only August 14 was being made controversial but the armed forces were being involved in it. Shujaat said this attitude of the rulers is deplorable, saying they should solve the political matters politically and should not involve the army institutions in it.
