Members of election reforms committee finalised
ISLAMABAD: The 22 members of the National Assembly have been finalised for the Electoral Reforms Committee and for the notification of the formation of the Electoral Reforms Committee will be issued after the Senate chairman appoints 11 members.
National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq and opposition leader Khursheed Shah have finalised names for the parliamentary committee that comprises 22 members of the National Assembly.
The nominees from the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) include Shazia Marri, Naveed Qamar, federal ministers Zahid Hamid and Abdul Qadir Baloch and State Minister Anoosha Rehman. The committee also consists of three members from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and three members of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM).
The members of National Assembly have been nominated while nominees from the Senate are awaited. The notification of the formation of the Electoral Reforms Committee will be issued after Senate chairman appoints 11 members. The government has nominated a total of seven members for the committee, with three from the National Assembly and the remainder from the Senate. Furthermore, a letter has been written to the chairman of the Senate with a notification to submit the 11 names by July 24. Earlier on Thursday, the government and opposition had agreed on a procedure to constitute the committee. On June 10, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had written to National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq to constitute the special parliamentary committee with members from both houses of parliament to the issue. The committee will be mandated to consider and present recommendations ensuring free, fair and transparent elections, the amends in constitutional provisions relating to caretaker governments and the adoption of the latest technology currently available for holding elections.
