Decision to deploy army in Islamabad challenged in IHC

ISLAMABAD: The federal government’s decision to deploy the army in Islamabad has been challenged in the Islamabad High Court (IHC)

Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan had announced that the army will be deployed in the federal capital for three months from August 1 under article 245 of the constitution.

The IHC heard the petition on Monday and Advocate Sheikh Ahsanuddin called for the notification for deploying the army to be suspended.

IHC Chief Justice Anwar Qazi inquired why the notification was not attached with the petition to which Additional Attorney General Tariq Mehmood replied that even he had not received the copy of the notification.

Justice Qazi remarked that the media had received a copy and an order could not be issued without the notification being presented. He further said that there was a law and order situation in Karachi and Waziristan not in Islamabad.

The court has summoned a reply from the federation on August 6 along with the notification for army deployment.
