Dr Jamaldini elected as Senate body chairman

ISLAMABAD: Senate Standing Committee on Rules of Procedure and Privileges in its meeting on Tuesday unanimously elected Dr Jehanzeb Jamaldini as its Chairman. On the occasion, Dr Jamaldini vowed to keep up with the level of performance of the committee and said that he would do his best to protect the integrity of the institution of Senate, the government and the state of Pakistan. The meeting of the committee was held at the Parliament House essentially for the election of its new chairman who hails from Balochistan. It may be noted that the seat fell vacant after the resignation of former elected chairman Senator Saleem Zia from the ruling Pakistan Muslim Leaque-Nawaz (PML-N). The name of Dr Jamaldini was proposed by Senator Saeed Ghani and seconded by Senator Zahida Khan. The election was administered by Senate Additional Secretary Muhammad Hasan Khan. Senator Saeed Ghani after felicitating the chairman asked him to take the privilege motion relating to pending legislation regarding the local government elections in the federal capital in the next meeting due to urgency of the matter. He further said that this committee is an important one having over a period of time strengthened the oversight role of the parliament. Senator Raja Zafarul Haq said that the chairman of the committee before the Senate elections in March this year had set very high standards of the working by the committee and never exercised prejudice against anybody. He said that this neutrality has enhanced not only his personal prestige but also that of the Senate as an institution. The committee members showed pleasure over the election of a Balochi to the office of the chairman. Dr Jamaldini expressed gratitude over his election and said that learning from the experience of senior senators, he would try to create a sense of harmony between the treasury and opposition benches.
