SC rejects schedule for Islamabad LG polls

ISLAMABAD – The Supreme Court on Wednesday rejected the schedule for holding Local Government elections in Islamabad and directed the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to issue a fresh schedule, reported by private TV channel.

According to the original schedule, the polls were to be held on July 25. Earlier today, the court demanded from the government an answer to whether it is ready to hold LG elections in Islamabad. The apex court resumed the hearing of the Islamabad LG polls case today.

Justice Jawwad S Khawaja questioned why only the people of Islamabad have been deprived of LG polls. He said that that he would be blunt today and requires solid answers in writing, adding that all other bills are given priority in the parliament except for this one. Justice Khawaja further said that a bill relating to finance was just passed in the parliament.

He said that we could not question the parliament but we can question the government. He also said that LG elections have already been held in Balochistan as well as Cantonment Board and furthermore the schedules for Sindh and Punjab LG polls have been submitted. The case was adjourned till August 3.
