Experts claim KE entirely at fault due to non-maintenance of system

KARACHI: Experts on Monday claimed that K-Electric was entirely at fault for the four major power breakdowns within a week.

An expert at K-Electric, Chaudhry Mazhar, asserted that the insulators of the system had not been cleaned during the winters and due to this as well as dew collecting on the insulators caused the tripping.

A former member of K-Electric’s governing council alleged that the repair work and maintenance of feeders as well as grid stations has not been done in a long time.

He added that instead of changing devices and parts, old ones are still being used.

An engineer, Jabbar, stated that maintenance of critical transmission lines is also not in accordance with standard procedures.

Sources at K-Electric declared that to save money, the company did not keep an emergency storage of diesel which would have saved the calamity and restored power.

A fourth major power breakdown was experienced within one week as the port city plunged into darkness in the early hours on Monday.

Several areas of Karachi were without electricity including Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Clifton, Gulsitan-e-Johar, FB Area, Sohrab Goth, Ancholi, New Karachi, North Nazimabad and Liaqatabad.

A spokesman for K-Electric said all units of Bin Qasim power plant 1 and 2 along with 95 feeders had stopped working.
