Pakistan invites Hurriyat leaders for Eid get together

NEW DELHI/SRINAGAR – The Pakistan High Commission has invited leaders of the Hurriyat Conference for a get together on the occasion of Eid ul Fitr on July 21, local and foreign media reported.

The high commission had withdrawn an earlier invitation for an Iftar dinner in light of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi’s meeting on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Ufa, Russia.

In August 2014, a meeting between Pakistan High Commissioner Abdul Basit and the Hurriyat leaders had led to India calling off the proposed foreign secretary-level talks between Pakistan and India.

Govt may free ‘stone-pelters’ on Eid

The state media reported that the Prison Department plans to release a number of convicts on parole, while the government is also likely to set free the young people who have been detained under the Public Safety Act (PSA) for stone-pelting.

The local media quoted an unidentified police official as saying that over 50 convicts have been released on parole during the last one year. “There are at least 10 youth who have been detained under the PSA and are lodged at different prisons and their release will be cleared by the Home Department,” the official said.
