Surge in rivers' levels alarm authorities, Tarbela spillways opened
INPISLAMABAD - Rising water levels in rivers of the country have caused an alarming situation for the authorities.
Spillways of Tarbela Dam had been opened to support the outflow. Separately, Mangla Dam and Khanpur Dam had also reached points full as water level surged. Water levels in River Sutlej and River Ravi were also rising. Water surface had risen to at least 1,526-feet in Tarbela Dam. Moreover, the inflow was recorded at least 354,000 cusecs, while the discharge maintained at 300,300 cusecs.
It may be mentioned here that canals in Northeast Balochistan are likely to be flooded in light of the Pakistan Meteorological Department’s (PMD) forecast. Water inflow in Taunsa and Chashma barrages had exceeded 400,000 cusecs. Further increase in water levels is likely in the next two days due to heavy monsoon showers.
According to the Indus River System Authority (IRSA), water flow at Taunsa point was at least 401,745 cusecs. At Tarbela, water was flowing inwards at 349,200 cusecs, while the discharge was recorded at 309,500 cusecs. In River Sindh, water flow at Sukkur was at least 283,212 cusecs, whereas discharge was recorded at 227,582 cusecs. The authorities had issued flood warnings to the people residing near canals in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
