UNMOGIP team visits villages affected by Indian firing

ISLAMABAD: A team of United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) on Monday visited the Working Boundary at sectors Chaprar, Salehpur and Milani near Sialkot where India recently killed at least four civilians and injured five.

According to details, representatives of the Pakistan armed forces visited the offices of UNMOGIP on Friday and lodged a written complaint against India.

The report read that the unprovoked cross border firing by BSF came soon after Nawaz-Modi meeting at the Russian city of Ufa during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit. The UN observers met the affected villagers and noted down their testimonies and concerns.

Later, the team visited the Line of Control (LoC) at Azad Kashmir where the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) resorted to unprovoked firing during Eid. The team was informed that the Pakistan Army befittingly responded to the unprovoked Indian firing. Earlier, the Indian high commissioner to Pakistan was summoned at the Foreign Office to protest the intrusion of Pakistani airspace by an Indian spy drone in Bhimber. The Indian authorities denied the allegations, citing the “drone did not belong to the Indian armed forces”. Reports in the Indian newspapers suggested the drone was “made in China” and could have been flown by any civilian at either side of the border. Pakistan has recently taken the stance of responding befittingly every time BSF resorts to unprovoked firing. The recent cross border fire exchange has escalated tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.

Pakistani authorities are concerned as India is attempting an “escalation in tension” as the Pakistan Army is combating the banned terrorist outfit Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).
