Indian CM calls off meeting with Basit
Meeting was scheduled in wake of Gurdaspur attack

CHANDIGARH – India’s Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on Tuesday called off a meeting with Pakistan’s High Commissioner Abdul Basit – scheduled for July 29 here in the wake of Gurdaspur gun battle.

Harcharan Bains – Indian adviser to chief minster on National Affairs and media – said that the meeting was called off in view of incident at Dinanagar in Gurdaspur district. The Pakistani envoy was scheduled to visit Chandigarh from July 29 to August 1.

– Pakistan condemns attack in Gurdaspur –

The government of Pakistan condemned a deadly attack on an Indian police station, amid accusations by Indian officials that the attackers crossed the Indian border. “Pakistan reiterates its condemnation of terrorism in all its forms and manifestations,” the statement said.

“We extend heartfelt sympathies and condolences to the government and people of India,” it said. Azad Jammu Kashmir Prime Minister Chaudhry Abdul Majeed called upon the world community to play a proactive role in stopping genocide of Kashmiris by Indian forces in the disputed state.

On Monday, Indian lawmaker Harinder Singh Khalsa termed the ghastly attack in Gurdaspur as a total failure of the state. “I was totally shocked to hear this. It is a total failure of the state. The centre is largely dependent on the state intelligence and it is a failure of the state. I do not rule out the possibilities that it can be politically motivated too,” he said.
