Pak-Afghan ties vital for regional peace, security: COAS

RAWALPINDI: US Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, Richard Olson called on the Chief of Army Staff, General Raheel Sharif, ISPR said Saturday.

In a statement, Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR), the media wing of Pakistan military said the Army Chief and Richard Olson exchanged views on regional security particularly situation in Afghanistan.

Later, US delegation led by Senator John McCain held a meeting with the Army Chief and discussed bilateral relations and regional security.

Speaking on the occasion, General Raheel emphasized on effective Pak-Afghan border management and said, “Stable Afghanistan is in the interest of Pakistan. Relations between the two neighbours are vital for regional peace and security.”

Senator John McCain acknowledged Pakistan’s success in anti-terror operations particularly Zarb-e-Azb and termed these achievements ‘remarkable’.

Earlier, Richard Olson held meeting with Foreign Secretary Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry in Islamabad.

“They discussed the regional security situation and efforts for peace and stability in Afghanistan,” stated a press release issued by Pakistan’s Foreign Office on Saturday.

The foreign secretary underlined Pakistan’s focus on effective border management on Afghanistan-Pakistan border with a view to enhancing security and counter-terrorism efforts.
