Gen Sharif telephones Saudi minister, condemns suicide attacks

RAWALPINDI: Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif telephoned Saudi Deputy Prince and Defence Minister Muhammad bin Salman al-Saud and condemned the series of suicide attacks that hit the kingdom on Monday.

According to a statement issued here by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), General Raheel Sharif expressed sympathy to the families affected by the terrorist attacks.

“We stand by our Saudi brothers in their fight against terrorism,” the army chief told the Saudi defence minister.

Four Saudi security personnel were killed and five others wounded in a suicide bombing outside one of Islam´s holiest sites, the Prophet´s Mosque in Madina.

The attack took place as worshippers were gathering at the mosque for the sunset prayers, which mark the time when they could break their fast during the holy month of Ramazan which ends on Tuesday.

"Security forces suspected a man who was heading towards Al-Masjid al-Nabawi (the Prophet´s Mosque) as he passed through a visitors parking lot," the Saudi interior ministry said in a statement.

Two other attacks were carried out in Jeddah and Qatif cities.
