Rain wreaks havoc in Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
SIALKOT/PESHAWAR: Various cities of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa received monsoon rain on Wednesday as Met Office forecast more downpours for the provinces till the next three days.Heavy rainfall caused inundation in Peshawar, Sialkot, Gujrat and Abbottabad and many other cities.
After several hours’ of heavy rainfall in Punjab the water level in drains was raised while in Gujranwala water entered in several government buildings and hospitals .
Several hours of heavy rain caused flash flooding in Abbottabad and adjoining areas. This caused the roofs of dozens of homes to collapse, killing two children.
Rain and thunderstorm with gusty winds occurred in Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and northern areas of Pakistan. The highest amount of rain was recorded in Gujrat at an estimated 135mm. Rain claimed the lives of two siblings in Sambrial near Sialkot.
Roads in Gujranwala were submerged under rainwater in different localities adding to the issues of the locals, while Sargodha was witnessing inundation and long power outages due to faulty feeders.
The Met department predicted heavy rain and warned that flooding will continue for the next two days. Strong monsoon currents are likely to penetrate in Mianwali and Bhakkar as well as other areas of South Punjab.
Poorly-built homes, particularly in rural areas, are most susceptible to collapse during heavy spring rain each year.
