Funds should be spent by elected representatives: Mustafa Kamal

KARACHI: PSP leader Syed Mustafa Kamal held a press conference on Monday at Pakistan House and called for devolution of powers and funds to the lower levels.

During his press conference, Mustafa Kamal said there used to be much talk about the National Finance Commission (NFC) award but no work regarding it could be done at the provincial level. He said that the funds released through the NFC awards were going to waste. Kamal said that after the NFC award, problems of the people have worsened.

"Have the problems of the people of Pakistan been solved through the 18th amendment and the NFC award?" he asked. "You will not be able to solve the problems of the common man until and unless you devolve powers to the district-level," he said.

Kamal also said during the course of his media talk that a handful of people were in charge of the fates of millions. Referring to the Sindh budget, he said:-

"It is a budget of more than Rs 800 billion. How can that money be distributed by a few chosen ministers? questioned Kamal.

He called for accountability of the money that had been promised in the budget and said that funds released by the government in the budget were for the people of Pakistan.

"This money should be spent in a democratic manner," demanded Kamal. "It should be spent by those who have been elected by the people of Pakistan," he added.

he called for the formation of provincial finance commissions to solve the people's problems and urged Sindh government to provide their full cooperation in this regard.

Kamal was also accompanied by Dr Sagheer Ahmed and Ashfaq Mangi at the press conference.
