Separate law needed for matters pertaining to Panama Papers: Aitzaz

‘Accountability of not only that person whose name appears in Panama Papers but of the entire family should be carried out’

ISLAMABAD: In a press conference held by the joint opposition on the Parliamentary Committee on Terms of references (ToRs) on Monday, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) senior leader and Senator Aitzaz Ahsan said that a separate law needs to be formed for matters pertaining to Panama Papers.

He said that Hussain Nawaz himself disclosed about their property worth billions of dollars. He added that the government kept the same ToRs which the Supreme Court nullified. “Any name that appears in the Panama leaks, the accountability of not only that person but of the entire family should be carried out,” says Aitzaz.

The Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s son initiated the Panama leaks issue by revealing the details in a TV show even before the scandal became public, Aitzaz said in the press conference. He himself revealed the news of his family’s involvement in Panama leaks, added Aitzaz. PM Nawaz’s family has been involved in money laundering and substantial amount of funds have been transferred abroad, he further said.

“The government doesn’t want to make commission on panama papers issue,” he added while stressing that the opposition had accepted three out of four ToRs of the government. After presenting himself for accountability, the prime minister has refused to offer himself for accountability. The opposition further added that we wanted to see Prime Minister clear himself in this scandal if he is innocent. “Prime Minister’s refusal to offer himself for accountability has proved that he has something to hide,” said Aitzaz.

The press conference was attended by five out of nine parties of the joint opposition.
