Committee recommends to hold mock exercise for voting by overseas Pakistanis

ISLAMABAD: National Assembly Sub-Committee on Electoral Reforms on Thursday recommended to hold mock exercise for voting by Overseas Pakistanis (OPs) through internet, to include them in electoral process.

The committee, convened by Dr. Arif Alvi, acknowledged the role of Overseas Pakistanis who contribute a large share of remittances which help strengthen the national economy.

"Overseas Pakistanis plays an important role in country's economy through their remittances and they must be given opportunity to use their constitutional right of voting", the members of committee said.

They said, the mock exercise for voting by Overseas Pakistanis would be held on trial basis through internet as part of the government' efforts to ensure their participation in electoral process. The committee also reviewed the progress made on Bio-metric system of authentication of voters and use of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) in the general election.

The committee was informed by the officials of Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) that tender has been placed for procurement of EVMs and the process will be completed with transparency. The meeting was attended by members of the committee and officials of related departments and ministries.
