NAB meeting held on annual inspection of headquarters’ divisions

* Chairman says NAB headquarters has played a pivotal role in the overall achievements of the regional bureaus

ISLAMABAD: A two-day meeting of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) regarding the Annual Inspection 2014 of different divisions of the NAB headquarters started here on Tuesday with Chairman Qamar Zaman Chaudhry in the chair. The performance evaluation of Operations Division, Human Resource Division (HRM), Information Technology and Administration Division was carried out on Tuesday while that of Awareness and Prevention, Training & Research and Prosecution divisions would be held on Wednesday, said a press release. The Chairman’s Inspection & Monitoring Team (CI&MT), which conducted the annual inspection of the NAB headquarters, presented its report in the meeting. The performance evaluation was done under a defined quantified grading system. The CI&MT senior member along with his team highlighted the strengths and weaknesses of various divisions. He said on the directives of the NAB chairman a quantified grading system had been devised first time in the Bureau’s history. Under this grading system, performance of all NAB regional bureaus had been evaluated already. Quantitative results of the Divisions were highlighted. NAB Chairman Qamar Zaman Chaudhry observed that the Bureau was the country’s apex anti-corruption organisation which was assigned with the responsibility to curb corruption and corrupt practices through a holistic approach of awareness, prevention and enforcement. He said the annual inspection of all NAB regional bureaus had been completed, due to which the output of the NAB in all spheres had increased manifold. He said the NAB headquarters played a pivotal role in the overall achievements of the regional bureaus. The points raised by NAB Chairman’s Inspection & Monitoring Team (CI&MT) would help improve the capacity and efficiency of bureaus/divisions, he added. During the briefing, it was informed that the NAB headquarters received 7,286 complaints during the year and all of them were disposed of. This number of complaints was highest ever in the history of the NAB headquarters. The NAB received 80 Suspicious Transaction Reports (STRs) from Financial Monitoring Unit (FMU) of the State Bank of Pakistan during 2014. In this respect, the NAB headquarters authorised 46 inquiries, two investigations and filed three references in the accountability courts. Out of an amount of Rs2.7 billion, Rs400 million were ceased. The CI&MT team further informed that during 2014, the NAB headquarters arrested 53 accused persons. During the evaluation of HRM Division, HRM DG was asked to complete the verification of degrees of officers/officials till March 31 and recruitment of officers/officials be made through NTS on merit. The NAB chairman directed the Headquarters DG to make all efforts to complete NAB Headquarters’ new building till December 31, 2015 and further directed to make NAB’s website user-friendly having all necessary information about filing of complaints against the corrupt. He also directed the Headquarters DG for timely development of Accountability Management System (AMS) on modern lines to support enforcement operations. In this regard hiring of an IT specialist has already been finalised. He directed the NAB International Cooperation Wing (ICW) director to expedite the cases with the help of INTERPOL and other related agencies of the corrupt who are hiding abroad. Chairman Qamar Zaman Chaudhry appreciated the performance of Operations Division, Human Resource Division (HRM), Information Technology and Administration Division. He directed NAB officers/officials to work more vigilantly and diligently in order to curb corruption and corrupt practices from the country. The chairman also appreciated the work done by CI&MT and performance of different divisions of NAB Headquarters. He emphasised for further improvement in NAB’s work so that nation’s aspirations against corruption could be fulfilled.
