Thaw in MQM-N league relations as Altaf, Shahbaz talk on phone

LONDON: Muttahida Qaumi Movement Chief Altaf Hussain and Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif made a telephonic conversation on Monday, in the first direct contact between the top leadership of both the parties over the last 17 years.

According to a statement issued by the MQM, Hussain and Sharif held discussion on cooperation between the two parties in the election of Chairman and Deputy Chairman of the Senate, prevailing political situation and military operation in tribal areas.

The MQM chief said ideological differences were part of democratic process and “we must not turn political dissent into tribal enmity”.

“Putting aside past bitterness and accepting each other mandate, we should maintain an atmosphere of mutual respect,” he said.

Agreeing with the MQM chief, Shahbaz Sharif expressed his desire to meet him in London. Both leaders also prayed for the success of operation Zarb-e-Azb during the conversation.
