SIALKOT – Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Saturday said the ongoing operation in Karachi was against criminals and not against any political party, besides getting the city rid of the gun culture.

Talking to the business community here at the Sialkot Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI), he said that the operation would be taken to its logical conclusion. He said that the government was committed at making Karachi peaceful so that investors could utilise the existing excellent infrastructure of the port city.

He said that incidents of kidnapping for ransom, target killings and heinous crimes had declined following the operation and hoped that life in the city would soon return to normalcy and make it a heaven for industrialists and investors from across the world. He said that the Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) government was not doing any favour by conducting the operation, rather it was doing so because of its national obligations.

The prime minister said that it was the responsibility of the government to make Karachi and the entire country peaceful. He also announced construction of Sialkot-Lahore expressway that would cut the travel time to around an hour. He said that his government was working hard to confront the challenges of shortages of electricity and natural gas, poor economy and terrorism with a zeal and commitment, and hoped that the people would see positive changes before the end of its tenure.

He said that the government was planning to generate 3600 MW electricity through LNG (liquefied natural gas), buy 4000 MW from China and add 10000 MW more by the end of 2017. On the economic performance of the government, Nawaz said that economy was turning around as a result of effective and prudent policies. He said that Pakistan’s foreign exchange reserves had increased and international institutions were also recognizing Pakistan's improved economic indicators.

Nawaz said that the government had reduced bank borrowing to give space to the business community. He added that it had also reduced interest rate, which would be further cut to promote economic activities in Pakistan. He said that the government wanted to reduce the electricity tariff and cheap sources of energy, including coal and LNG, were being exploited. He said that Sialkot had a special significance in Pakistan’s economy and investment in the area would be encouraged to further enhance exports.
