Qatar Emir gets warm welcome on arrival in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD - The Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani, arrived in Pakistan on Monday on a two-day state visit to Pakistan for talks on bilateral matters, focusing on economic cooperation, officials said.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif received the Emir of Qatar and members of his delegation at a military airbase. Ministers, services chiefs and top officials were also at the airbase. He was given a 21-gun salute on his arrival. A contingent of Pakistani forces presented guard of honour to the Qatari Emir. It is Sheikh Tamim’s first official visit to Pakistan as the Emir of Qatar as part of his regional visit. He will also travel to several other regional countries, diplomatic sources said. During the visit, the Emir will hold official talks with the prime minister and will meet President Mamnoon Hussain, the Foreign Ministry said. “Both sides will discuss ways to further enhance bilateral cooperation in various fields including energy, investment, trade, defence and manpower. Regional and global issues of mutual interest and concern will also be discussed,” a Foreign Ministry statement said.

Both countries will sign agreements, including the import of LNG, to enhance cooperation in various fields. The Emir is accompanied by a high-level delegation including Cabinet Ministers, Qatar Airways chairman and senior government officials. “The official visit of Qatar Emir will provide fresh impetus to bilateral relations,” the statement said. Earlier, Sheikh Tamim had visited Pakistan in 2010 in his capacity as the then Crown Prince of Qatar, to offer financial assistance of Rs. 400 million for the people affected by floods.
