'PEMRA to stop one sided defamatory live telecasts against party leadership'

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has asked Pakistan Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) to stop live telecast of systematic, one sided defamatory programs against its leader former President Asif Ali Zardari being aired in violation of the regulatory body’s rules and regulations and the Constitution.

In a letter to PEMRA the PPP General Secretary Sindh Senator Taj Haider drew attention of the regulator toward a systematic campaign launched by Dr Zulfiqar Mirza to defame the party leadership through a malicious tirade on TV channels with impunity. The letter was delivered by Senator Taj Haider and Senator Karim Khawaja to PEMRA chairman today.

The one sided and malicious outbursts employing cheap and vulgar language made continually and without substantiation on TV channels against former president is a serious violation of the PEMRA rules and must be checked, it said. Taj Haider said that television channels also had a duty to ensure that its platform was not used for airing programs that were defamatory and based on false and unsubstantiated allegations against anyone.

The PPP leader called upon PEMRA to intervene and take necessary action within seven days failing which he shall have to take necessary legal action.
