PM underscores need to improve political conditions in Karachi

BAHAWALPUR: The prevailing political condition in Karachi needs to be improved, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said Tuesday after inaugurating the country’s first 100MW solar power plant in Bahawalpur.

Citizens will accept that law and order situation in the city has improved and extortion has almost been eliminated, said the prime minister.

He said that it was his government's priority to eliminate terrorism and to restore law and order in Karachi, the country’s largest city and economic hub. He claimed that the militancy-hit areas had now been cleansed of terrorism.

Nawaz vowed that the promised Karachi-Lahore motorway project would soon be completed.

Promises end to power woes by 2018

Speaking to the crowd attending the inauguration ceremony, the prime minister promised that Pakistan would overcome its acute shortage of power and severe energy crisis by the year 2018.

“By 2017-18, loadshedding will be completely eliminated from Pakistan,” he said

The prime minister was addressing a crowd following the inauguration of the country's first solar power plant, the Quaid-e-Azam Solar Park, in Bahawalpur.

He said that the world was acknowledging the country’s economic growth, and that it was the first time that the government was seen to be practically working towards Pakistan's progress.

“We hope to end the darkness in Pakistan, and eliminate poverty from the country. Inshallah, the wheels of industry will move again,” he said.

He said that the first phase of the Bahawalpur solar project had been initiated and that project would eventually generate 950 megawatts of electricity, creating thousands of jobs for the people of the region.

Earlier, the prime minister inaugurated the Rs 15 billion Quaid-e-Azam Solar Power Park – Pakistan’s first ever 100MW solar power generation plant – which was completed in 11 months with the Chinese government bearing the costs.

On the occasion, the Prime Minister also inaugurated a commemorative stamp issued by the Pakistan Post.

Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif, Acting Governor Rana Muhammad Iqbal Khan, Minister for Water and Power Khawaja Muhammad Asif, Minister for Petroleum Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and Chinese ambassador Sun Weidong also attended the groundbreaking ceremony.
