Pakistan desires to enhance multiple ties with Myanmar: Mamnoon

ISLAMABAD - President Mamnoon Hussain on Thursday said Pakistan desired to enhance its relations with Myanmar in the fields of trade, commerce, defence and tourism.

In a meeting with Myanmar Defence Services Commander-in-Chief Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, who called on him with a delegation at the Presidency, the president offered to provide training to Myanmar in education, defence and other sectors.

President Mamnoon told the delegation that operation Zarb-e-Azb was progressing successfully against terrorists and had produced positive results. He highlighted that bilateral trade between the two countries was below its true potential, and said it needed to be further enhanced.

He also congratulated Myanmar for successfully holding the chairmanship of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 2014. President Mamnoon observed that Pakistan and Myanmar had a long history of friendly relations, and stated that Pakistan respected sovereignty and territorial integrity of Myanmar.

He said Pakistan would continue to support Myanmar's efforts for regional peace and cooperation at all levels. He also expressed hope that the government of Myanmar would provide equal treatment to all minorities.
