Mamnoon hails NDU role in formulation of security policy

ISLAMABAD/RAWALPINDI: President Mamnoon Hussain said on Thursday that the National Defence University (NDU) has the status of a key think tank in formulation of policy for national security and defence in the country.

Talking to NDU President Lt Gen Anwar Ali Hyder HI (M) who called on him at the Aiwan-e-Sadr, President Mamnoon stated that NDU was an important institution of the country which was discharging its responsibilities in formulating and developing defence strategy.

The president added that it is also imparting education and training to military as well as civilian officers and the goal of training is to assist in grooming future military and civilian leadership. He said NDU enjoyed excellent ranking not only in Pakistan but also in Asia. He observed that graduates of NDU always cherished good memories and harboured good image of this premier institute.

He also called for further enhancing the capacity of the faculty and directed for expanding the accommodation facilities for the students of the university. Assuring his all-out support for the university, he opined that NDU could play an important role in the area of informal diplomacy.

Meanwhile in a meeting on Thursday with Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, the Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Myanmar, President Mamnoon said that Pakistan desired to enhance its relations with Myanmar in the fields of trade, commerce, defence and tourism. The visiting dignitary from Myanmar called on him along with a delegation at the Aiwan-e-Sadr.

The president offered to provide training to Myanmar in education, defence and other sectors. He apprised the visiting delegation that operation Zarb-e-Azb against terrorists was progressing successfully and had produced positive results. He highlighted that bilateral trade between the two countries was below its true potential and said it needed to be further enhanced.

He also congratulated Myanmar for successfully holding the chairmanship of the Association of Southeast Asia Nations (ASEAN) in 2014. He observed that Pakistan and Myanmar had a long history of friendly relations and stated that Pakistan respected sovereignty and territorial integrity of Myanmar. He said that Pakistan would continue supporting Myanmar’s efforts for regional peace and cooperation at all levels. He also expressed hope that Government of Myanmar would provide equal treatment to all minorities including the Muslim minority.

Myanmar’s Senior General Min Aung Hlaing also called on Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) General Rashad Mahmood on Thursday and discussed defence, security related issues and bilateral cooperation between the two countries in defence sector.

Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) said that during the meeting of the commander-in-chief of Myanmar with Gen Rashad Mahmood, both the dignitaries discussed matters related to professional interest and mutual cooperation between the two armed forces.

While being briefed on security perspective of Pakistan the visiting dignitary appreciated the professionalism and sacrifices rendered by the armed forces of Pakistan in the ongoing war on terrorism.

Senior General Min Aung Hlaing is heading a high-level delegation and the visit is part of bilateral measures to enhance cooperation between the two armed forces. Earlier, upon his arrival at Joint Staff Headquarters, he was presented a guard of honour by a smartly turned-out contingent of the three services.
