SC suspends tribunal’s decision on NA-125 elections

ISLAMABAD – Supreme Court on Monday suspended an election tribunal’s decision to unseat Railways Minister Saad Rafique over alleged irregularities in the 2013 general election, reported by private TV channel.

The ministers had challenged the tribunal’s decision in the apex court which accepted Saad Rafique’s appeal. A three-member bench of Supreme Court headed by Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali took up the case and barred the election tribunal from holding by-election in NA-125 constituency of Lahore, the seat won by Saad Rafique in May 2013.

After hearing the minister’s petition today, the bench issued notices to Election Commission Secretary and relevant Returning Officers (ROs). The SC has sought from the tribunal record of election in NA-125, before adjourning the case for four weeks. The court said that the tribunal’s decision would remain suspended for four weeks.
