Kalsoom inaugurates Pakistan Thalassaemia Centre

ISLAMABAD: Kalsoom Nawaz on Tuesday inaugurated state-of-the-art Pakistan Baitul Maal’s (PBM) Thalassaemia Centre at Fatima Jinnah Park. Addressing on the occasion, she reiterated resolve of the government to take every possible step for control and treatment of the disease in the country by providing medical assistance to the thalassaemia patients. She said that the centre would be helpful for those children who were suffering from thalassaemia, as these patients needed continued treatment of the disease, she added. She said that children who mostly affect from this disease needed special medical care. She said that thalassaemia was one of the inherited diseases, which was transferred through mother and father. She said if mother or father carried symptoms of thalassaemia in blood than their child would be thalassaemia minor patient. If mother and father both had symptoms of thalassaemia than their child would be thalassaemia major, she added She urged that both male and female should have their blood tests before marriage. She said that the disease could be eliminated by optimal awareness of the service providers. Kalsoom said that it was a high time to create awareness in the community for proper counselling, management and to achieve adequate preventive measures both from the community and service providers’ perspectives. She said that there was a crucial requirement for counselling services for parents of patients suffering with thalassaemia either minor or major for optimal management and follow up.
