Senate to discuss KASB, Bank Islami merger tomorrow
By Ijaz Kakakhel

ISLAMABAD: The Upper House of parliament on Tuesday adopted an adjournment motion under which the House will discuss the merger of KASB Bank with Bank Islami.

Senators Saeed Ghani, Muhammad Ali Khan Saif and Osman Saifullah Khan wanted to discuss the merger of KASB Bank with Bank Islami. Senate Chairman Mian Raza Rabbani fixed Thursday for debate on the motion. He also noted that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly’s members protest demonstration outside the Parliament House was due to denial of rights to the provinces. He said that elected representatives of one unit of the federation are staging a protest outside the Parliament House for the rights of the province.

He said that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly is one of the constituencies of the Senate, which is a symbol of the federation, adding that he had spoken to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Pervez Khattak on telephone and told him to raise their concerns through their representatives in the Upper House. Meanwhile, Minister for Commerce Eng Khurram Dastagir Khan informed the Senate that the Finance Ministry was working expeditiously to finalise the recommendations of the 9th National Finance Commission (NFC) award.

Responding to a call attention notice in the House moved by Senator Sassui Palijo regarding delay in announcement of 9th NFC award, the minister said that the government has fulfilled its responsibility well ahead of time. He said that the president constituted the 9th NFC on April 24; therefore, the question of delay does not arise. However, Palijo was of the opinion that provinces were not given their due rights due to the delay in the finalisation of the NFC award. The minister, while responding, said that the constitution does not impose any limitation on the government to finalise the recommendations after the commission is constituted upon completion of five years.
