Terrorism to end soon due to effective govt actions: Mamnoon

ISLAMABAD: President Mamnoon Hussain has said that the scourge of terrorism is taking its last breath owing to effective actions by the state against the terrorists. He said that Wednesday’s tragic incident in Karachi showed desperation on the part of the terrorists.
He stated this while addressing the visiting delegates of the National Defence University (NDU) workshop on ‘National Harmony’ at the Aiwan-e-Sadr on Thursday.
The president said that Pakistan is facing challenges of terrorism and extremism and noted that Wednesday’s cowardly terrorist act was an attempt by anti-state elements to create fissures and despondency in the society. He said that the armed forces of Pakistan have achieved commendable successes against terrorists and hoped that terrorism and extremism will soon be cleansed from the country.
President Mamnoon observed that for over a decade Pakistan faced severe waves of militancy and extremism but the country and the nation not only bravely stood up to the terrorists but also took successful actions against the enemies of the state due to which the menace of terrorism is now taking its last breath. He emphasised that operation Zarb-e-Azb will continue till the elimination of the last terrorist.
He underlined the need to promote national harmony in the country and called upon the educational institutions across country to play their due role in this regard. He observed that a nation could progress only through unity and solidarity and called for turning such challenges into opportunities.
The president said that the process is underway to bring the divided strata of society into the national mainstream for which efforts are being made to address the grievances of people from the Tribal Areas and Balochistan. He hoped that there would be a new era of national harmony in the country in the coming years. He observed that holding of workshops like this by NDU and alike institutes has also played a role in enabling the creation of the current environment of political maturity, fraternity and harmony in the country.
He said that corruption has badly damaged the country while emphasising that each individual of the society should its play part in eliminating this curse. He also stressed the social boycott of corrupt elements for eradicating the menace of corruption. He said that a concerted struggle must be waged to eliminate corruption for setting a bright example for the future generations.
Meanwhile, President Mamnoon Hussain in a meeting with Speaker of the National Assembly of Kuwait Marzouq Ali M. Al-Ghanim has urged on resolving the issue of Kuwaiti ban on visas for Pakistani nationals. The Kuwaiti speaker along with a delegation called on the president at the Aiwan-e-Sadr.
The president said that Pakistan attaches great importance to its relations with Kuwait and wishes to enhance cooperation in all mutually beneficial areas. He noted that the Pakistani community is making positive contribution to the socioeconomic development of Kuwait. He said that the strong Pakistani community in Kuwait is an important bridge between the two countries adding that Pakistan would be happy to meet future manpower requirements of Kuwait.
He stated that Pakistan and Kuwait have always stood by each other in testing times. He said that Pakistan wishes to further enhance and balance bilateral trade volume with Kuwait. He expressed the hope that early conclusion of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) would also be helpful in expanding bilateral trade. He said Pakistan is an investment friendly country and an attractive destination for foreign investors because of its liberal investment policy and high rate of return.
Noting with appreciation that a number of projects in Pakistan are being funded by Kuwait, President Mamnoon said Pakistan would welcome further investment from Kuwait in mega infrastructure and energy projects. He stated that enhanced defence and security cooperation between the two countries is important in the wake of ever-increasing menace of terrorism, extremism and current challenges facing the region.
